Factors Affecting Static Electricity Generation
Static electricity generation is influenced by factors such as the type of material, impurities, surface condition, contact characteristics, separation speed, and charging history.




The type of material refers to the fact that when two objects in contact are made of different materials, the interfacial double layer and contact potential difference will differ, resulting in different charging strengths. In an electrostatic sequence, the contact potential difference is larger when two objects that are far apart come into contact. Impurities generally tend to increase static electricity. However, when the addition of impurities lowers the resistivity of the original material, it facilitates static electricity leakage. Since static electricity generation is mostly an interfacial phenomenon, the contamination of solid material surfaces by water and other pollutants will enhance static electricity. Surface roughness and oxidation also increase static electricity. This is referred to as surface condition. Contact characteristics, such as increased contact area and contact pressure, can increase static electricity. The higher the separation speed, the stronger the static electricity generated. The generated static electricity is roughly proportional to the square of the separation speed. The charging history alters the surface properties of the object, thus changing its charging characteristics. Generally, the initial charge is stronger, while the charge is weaker during repeated or continuous charging.
