Learning About EPAs
Why establish an EPA? How should an EPA be delineated?
■ EPAs are established to confine operations involving electrostatic-sensitive components to designated areas, thereby facilitating management and control.
■ The delineation of an EPA should be based on production requirements and should facilitate the transport, transfer, and handling of products.

How should an EPA be marked, and what do the markings signify? Typically, the area is demarcated using black-and-yellow striped anti-static tape. ESD markings serve to warn against unauthorized entry and indicate the requirement for electrostatic protection. Entry into the area or contact with relevant products is prohibited unless proper ESD protection measures are in place.
What should be considered when managing an EPA?
Avoid the use of insulating materials; prioritize materials that facilitate static dissipation; ensure metal conductors remain grounded; maintain grounding and equipotential bonding for all personnel and materials within the area; regulate and restrict personnel activities and production procedures to minimize friction; and increase air humidity to appropriate levels where conditions permit.
