What Should Manufacturing Enterprises Do for ESD Protection?

Static electricity poses a constant threat to industrial production. Electronics factories and other manufacturing facilities have recognized the hazards of static electricity and the importance of ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protection, often requiring workers to wear anti-static clothing and footwear. However, these measures alone are far from sufficient. What else should manufacturing enterprises do to effectively prevent static electricity issues?

2. Work surfaces used for handling ESD-sensitive components must be covered with anti-static mats.

3. ESD-sensitive components must be transported using anti-static shielding bags and anti-static handling containers.

4. ESD-sensitive components must be unpacked and tested on anti-static workstations; where feasible, ionizers (air ion generators) should be used to neutralize airborne static charges.

5. Soldering equipment and forming tools used in assembly must be properly grounded; internal-heating soldering irons should be used for soldering tasks.

6. Power supply systems should be modified to use isolation transformers; grounding connections must be secure (avoiding "floating grounds"), and grounding resistance should be less than 10 ohms.

7. During product testing, components should not be inserted or removed while the power is on; if such actions are necessary, the power must be turned off first.

8. ESD-sensitive components should not be removed from their original packaging prematurely; handle them correctly and avoid touching the component leads whenever possible.

9. When using wave soldering processes, both the solder and the transport system must be grounded.

Following these steps will significantly reduce static-related risks, though it may not eliminate the problem entirely. Achieving optimal ESD protection requires the collective effort of everyone involved.
