How ESD Wristbands Work

While anti-static wristbands come in a variety of materials, their working principle is generally the same: providing a path to ground for static electricity. For an anti-static wristband to function, it must be connected to a grounding connection point installed in the workstation, typically via a 10mm quick-release connector, or equipped with a removable coil and alligator clips for mobile applications.

The band is secured to the wrist with an adjustable strap, fitting snugly against the skin. The wristband's coil cable is connected to a common grounding point, which should be connected to a grounding electrode, preferably to the equipment ground. Typically, alligator clips are used to secure it to the computer or sensitive electronic equipment in use. The anti-static wristband must be connected to a grounding source, such as a connector plug, and used in conjunction with a grounding wire to be effective.
