Storage Requirements for Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Protection of Electronic Components

When transporting components with leads, conductive foam material is typically used. This prevents high potential differences between component leads. For dual in-line package (DIP) components, ESD-dissipating tubing is often used during bulk transport.

For circuit board assemblies, when located outside of ESD protection zones, they should be transported in ESD-shielded bags or conductive handling boxes. Some packaging bags are made of conductive materials, ensuring all components are at the same potential under stable conditions while dissipating any static charge that may accidentally accumulate on the bag. This method cannot be used for circuit boards with batteries. In such cases, packaging bags with an ESD-dissipating lining and a conductive outer layer should be used. These bags are more expensive but provide excellent protection for both powered and unpowered components. Similarly, conductive boxes with internal rails holding the circuit board in place should not be used with powered circuit boards that have exposed connectors on their edges.
