How Does Antistatic Fabric Work?

1. What is Antistatic Fabric?

Antistatic fabric is a functional fabric that pre-eliminates static electricity. It is woven by uniformly mixing antistatic fabric with conductive fibers. Conductive fibers refer to fibers made wholly or partially of metal, organic, or semi-conductive materials, with a volume resistivity (PV) of 10⁴-10⁹ ohms.

Protective clothing made from antistatic fabric mostly uses special polyester filaments/elastic yarns, with conductive fibers embedded in the warp or weft, woven using a special process. This fabric has better dustproof performance than protective clothing made with traditional antistatic agents, and its antistatic effect is several times stronger. The conductive fibers will not break, and because of its excellent dustproof performance, the number of washing cycles is greatly reduced. It is the preferred fabric for antistatic protective clothing.

2. Characteristics and Antistatic Workwear Mechanisms

Antistatic workwear made by adding conductive fibers to chemical fiber fabrics does not generate dust, does not shed lint, and is not prone to carrying micro-dust. Its unique design prevents dust intrusion. It is dust-free and its unique design also prevents dust intrusion. Its static electricity dissipation mechanism mainly consists of two mechanisms: leakage and neutralization. When grounded, static electricity on the fabric is not only neutralized by the corona discharge of the conductive fibers, but can also be discharged to the ground through the conductive fibers; when not grounded, it is eliminated by the weak corona discharge of the conductive fibers. Experiments show that static-dissipating workwear can effectively suppress static electricity in workwear and eliminate or reduce the hazards of electrostatic discharge.

Conversely, the metallic coating of conductive fabric, due to its extremely high conductivity, also has an antistatic effect. Because the coating is a high-purity metal layer, its antistatic function is very strong.
