Practical Work in an ESD Protected Area
If clear work procedures are not followed within an ESD protected area, charges and potentials cannot be maintained within acceptable limits.
Examples of potential problems include bringing documents, plastic containers, cups, etc., enclosed in non-static plastic covers, into the ESD protected area, and using cleaning agents that attack the electrostatic properties of floors or work surfaces. Personnel should receive adequate training to understand not only the procedures to be followed but also the reasons for following them.
It is also helpful to understand the parameters of components that may be damaged. A designated individual should be responsible for the care and maintenance of the ESD protected area and should also monitor compliance with these procedures. These inspections should also be verified as part of quality management system certification.
