Materials are typically categorized based on their properties. For materials used in production environments, they can be classified as: insulating materials, anti-static materials, static dissipative materials, and conductive materials. Examples include cleanroom printing paper, cleanroom wipes, cleanroom cleaning paper, and industrial wiping paper.
Insulating materials have a surface resistivity greater than 10¹⁴ Ω. Insulating materials tend to retain charge, and grounding them is ineffective because current cannot flow through insulators. To prevent damage from ESD, insulating materials should be kept away from electronic components and assembly areas. Examples of such materials are plastics, including polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, ceramics, and rubber. Combining plastics with conductive or anti-static ESD materials can protect components from ESD.
Anti-static materials resist the generation of static electricity. These materials have a surface resistivity of 10⁹ to 10¹⁴ Ω. They have a short lifespan, therefore their repeated use in storing assembled circuit boards and electronic components is limited. High surface resistivity means that grounding these materials will not completely dissipate the accumulated charge.
Conductive materials have a surface resistivity of less than 10⁶ Ω. You can release the charge accumulated on the surface of a conductive material to the ground. The electronics industry uses plastics incorporating conductive materials to package electronic components and circuit boards.
Static dissipative materials have a surface resistivity of 10⁵ to 10⁹ Ω. If you use this material to protect components from static electricity and ground the static dissipative shield, this low resistivity allows the charge on the component to be transferred to the ground. Friction can generate static charge in these materials, but the good conductivity allows the charge to be evenly distributed across the surface. Generally, these materials can be used to cover floors, tabletops, and assembly areas, or to make work clothes.
