Why is Static Electricity (ESD) Protection Necessary for Integrated Circuit Boards?

It is well known that static electricity (ESD) poses a significant threat to the microelectronics industry, and electronics factories implement stringent ESD protection measures. However, why are ESD protection measures necessary in electronics factories, and what specific harm does ESD cause to integrated circuits?

Firstly, the primary harm of ESD to circuit boards is electrostatic adsorption. This causes severe contamination. While circuit board manufacturing processes require clean or ultra-clean workshops, many domestic manufacturers struggle to achieve a completely particle-free environment. Current standards require dust particle sizes to be reduced from 0.3μm to 0.1μm. However, if the adsorbed dust particles are larger than the line width, it can easily render the product unusable.

Secondly, there is the harm caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD). This can cause device breakdown. ESD is a process of charge accumulation. When the charge accumulates to a certain level, a conductor approaching it will trigger an ESD discharge. If a conductor carrying a certain amount of static electricity is placed alone or installed in a circuit module, it will be immediately broken down. While ESD attacks may not cause immediate damage to devices, they reduce reliability and cause losses for manufacturers.

Thirdly, there is electronic interference. Electrostatic discharge radiates numerous radio waves, which, due to their frequency, can significantly interfere with surrounding microprocessors, causing program corruption, data errors, and severely impacting modern production processes.

Based on the above introduction, it is believed that everyone has a deeper understanding of the hazards of static electricity, especially those working in the electronics industry. This more detailed analysis of the damage static electricity causes to integrated circuit boards will help everyone make better judgments regarding static electricity protection.
